Just because a camera appears in the discovery list does not mean that the video stream can be opened. Treat discovery, device information, and media access as separate phases.
Basic approach
ONVIF profiles define interoperability features between devices and clients. Not every camera supports the same profiles and optional features. Authentication, network limits, and device configuration further impact successful media access.
Application steps
- Check ONVIF support in the manufacturer's documentation of the camera model and firmware version.
- Save the discovered address, the ID reported by the device, and the profile information separately.
- Verify media access with authorized account; Do not include the administrative password in the scan report.
Practical example
If a camera is discovered in the same VLAN but the recording server cannot receive streams from a different VLAN, do not present the discovery result as connection success. Access rules and flow destination between the two networks should also be checked.
Interpret the result correctly
Port 554 or web panel alone is not proof of ONVIF compliance. The manufacturer's compliance record and the device's actual response are more powerful sources. Profile support does not guarantee that all features will work with every client.
