Interpreting ping failure directly as the device being turned off will result in missing inventory. ICMP response and application service availability are different signals.

Basic approach

Ping provides information about reachability and round trip time with ICMP Echo messages. HTTPS or another service may be running while the firewall blocks these messages. Sleep mode, packet loss, and wrong route can also cause no response.

Application steps

  1. Verify the destination address and network adapter used.
  2. Check a known service of your own device with a low number of targeted connections.
  3. Save ICMP and service results separately; Do not set no response to off.

Practical example

If the same IP ping does not respond when opening an administration panel in the browser, the device is on and at least one service is accessible. In this case, instead of turning off the entire firewall, ask if the ICMP policy is the expected behavior.

Interpret the result correctly

Successful ping also does not indicate that the application is healthy. The server may respond at the network layer, but the web service may return an error. Reporting the result with the protocol used and time information explains the apparent discrepancy between different measurements.
