Take two controlled measurements with the same device to distinguish whether the slow connection is caused by the wireless network or the trunk. Don't change many variables at once.
Basic approach
Wi-Fi result is affected by signal, media sharing, client hardware and access point. Wired comparison reduces some of these factors, but Ethernet adapter and cable limits should also be checked. The time and target of the measurement should remain the same.
Application steps
- Use the same test target with Ethernet first, then Wi-Fi on the same computer.
- Keep VPN, background streaming and power mode status the same in both tests.
- Record speed, delay and loss together; Don't just look at the download value.
Practical example
The effect of wireless connection is strong if Ethernet 900 Mbps, Wi-Fi 300 Mbps near the access point, and 40 Mbps are measured in the remote room. However, tests performed with different phones and computers do not provide the same accuracy.
Interpret the result correctly
Signal bars do not directly indicate actual transmission capacity. Don't immediately upgrade a package just because one measurement is low. First repeat the same condition, then perform a manufacturer-specific review for the access point location or wireless environment.
